Man found dead after shooting near D.C. elementary school

WASHINGTON – A man was found dead near a Southeast D.C. elementary school early Friday morning following a reported exchange of gunfire.

Officials responded to the 5000 block of Bass Place, SE at about 3:30 a.m. and found a man with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and upper body, NBC Washington reports. The shooting occurred near Nalle Elementary School.

Emergency crews transported the man, whose identity has not yet been released, to an area hospital where he later died, according to NBC Washington.

Officials found a semi-automatic weapon beside the victim, NBC Washington reports. Authorities say more than two dozen shots were fired in the area, which damaged several vehicles.

Officials searched the area for the gunmen. No suspect information is available at this time.

Authorities are investigating the incident.

It is not yet clear whether the shooting affected Nalle Elementary School.
