SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is planning improvements to help manage the swamp's water levels.
The Department of the Interior awarded more than $3 million to the refuge for the project. The funding is part of $162 million announced by the department last week for 45 projects aimed at improving protection for Atlantic Coast communities from future powerful storms.
The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1eZKhaD ) reports that the refuge plans to replace and water control structures to help improve flood control, suppress fires and manage wildlife habitat.
