Dominion Raceway project set to begin construction

Sunday - 10/20/2013, 11:25am  ET

WASHINGTON - Some neighbors have concerns about the impact of the $16 million Dominion Raceway project, but it's full speed ahead for the complex as construction is set to begin.

The raceway, in Spotsylvania County, will have a auto-racing track and drag strip among other attractions, and is expected to draw thousands of people to events.

That's part of the problem, according to Diane Kuechler, a member of one of the groups opposing the Thornburg project. Pointing out that there are 4,000 homes and businesses in a five-mile radius of the future track, she says, "I can't imagine how you're going to get thousands of cars not backing up traffic."

Kuechler says noise is another concern, claiming that "they're planning things that can (happen) anywhere from 8 o'clock in the morning until 10 o'clock at night, seven days a week."

The developers say they're working with state transportation officials to ease concerns.

Construction starts in a few days; the raceway is expected to open in 2015.
