HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) -- Two people face hate crime charges in Harrisonburg stemming from an assault that police say was racially motivated.
Harrisonburg police say 20-year-old Christian Dane Reinertson of Harrisonburg and 23-year-old Jacob Devoshen Faircloth of Wise are each charged with felony assault and battery as a hate crime.
Police tell media outlets that the men, both of whom are white, are accused of assaulting a black man on Saturday.
The victim told police that several people spit on him from a deck of a nearby residence as he was leaving a home early Saturday. He says they also used racial slurs and threw alcoholic beverages at him.
The man told police the suspects jumped from the deck's railing and attacked him after he asked why he was being harassed.
