CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Engineering students at the University of Virginia now have a place where they can apply what they learned in the classroom.

Lacy Hall has space for students to build and tinker with satellites, small vehicles, steel bridge components and remote-controlled airplanes.

The Daily Progress ( ) reports that the university opened the $5 million building on Friday. It's part of the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Several organizations have their own spaces in the building. They include the U.Va. chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Virginia Baja Racing SAE, a club that designs, builds and races off-road buggies.
