I-95 Express Lanes at the halfway point

It’s official: The I-95 Express Lanes project has hit the halfway mark.

The Express Lanes will run for 29 miles, from Interstate 395 in Fairfax County to near Route 610 in Stafford County. Existing HOV lanes are being converted for carpooolers and folks willing to pay the tolls.

In the weeks to come, watch for crews to finish the last major steel lifts within the corridor, including beams for the future flyover ramp across I-95 near Garrisonville Road in mid-October and the future flyover ramp across I-395 near Edsall Road early next month.

Slated for completion by the end of next year, the I-95 Express Lanes will work just like the Beltway Express lanes, with solo drivers paying tolls and cars with three or more people inside riding for free.

Crews are due to complete most of the new paving by the end of this year and are laying down tons of asphalt along I-95 in the process. The good news is, there will be smoother and safer travel lanes more than a year before the Express Lanes even open.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell says the whole deal is on schedule to be finish by late next year.
