SPRINGFIELD, Va. (AP) -- A first-grade teacher at Crestwood Elementary in Springfield has been named Virginia's teacher of the year.
The Washington Post (http://tinyurl.com/n95yye3 ) reports that 39-year-old Melissa Porfirio was honored as the state's top teacher for 2014 during a ceremony in Richmond.
She says in a statement that she's honored to represent Virginia's teachers and that she was surprised when her name was called. Porfiro was one of eight finalists for the honor.
Porfirio is a former social worker, and her colleagues say she's known for using time outside of school to build relationships with students and their families.
She's now a nominee for national teacher of the year, which will be announced in the spring at the White House.
