RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Looking to reverse a slide in new polls, Republican Ken Cuccinelli is claiming his Democratic foe in Virginia's governor's race, Terry McAuliffe, would run up at least $12 billion in new state spending the next four years.

And to do that, Cuccinelli says at a Newport News news conference, McAuliffe must either raise taxes drastically or fail to deliver on his promises.

McAuliffe has repeatedly declined to put a price tag on promised initiatives, inviting Cuccinelli's attack.

His response has been that by expanding Medicaid in Virginia, state government would reap more than $21 billion over eight years in federal support, providing the cash for many of his priorities.

Polls in the past week show McAuliffe stretching a close race into a slight lead four weeks before election day.
