CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- State auditors have found internal errors in the Albemarle County Circuit Court Clerk's Office for the fourth consecutive year.
The latest audit from the Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts says the office held more than $423,989 that might have qualified for unclaimed property under state code. The audit also says the office failed to request tax set-off refunds. That resulted in potential loss of more than $2,200.
Other errors included $1,000 in state fines that weren't charged to a defendant and $790 in attorney fees that weren't billed to the county.
Circuit Court Clerk Debra M. Shipp tells The Daily Progress (http://bit.ly/1dTOyMn ) that her office has been understaffed since she took office in 2008.
She says the office has nine full-time employees who have more than 800 duties.
