Saturday - 9/28/2013, 11:31am  ET

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- Frederick police say nearly $4 million in fines have been issued through the city's red-light camera system.

Police say the cameras catch an average of 17 red-light violations every day.

The city has 12 cameras at nine intersections. They operate around-the-clock, with violations carrying a $75 fine.

Police say violations at intersections with a camera fell by 55 percent between July 2005 and July 2013.

Police have issued more than 50,000 citations during those eight years. Fines have totaled $3.8 million since the program began.

Lt. Jason Keckler, the patrol operations commander for the city's police department, tells The Frederick News-Post (http://bit.ly/17bw8F2 ) that the cameras have had a "direct impact on changing driving behavior" and have improved safety.
