PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- The Portsmouth school district will allow students, coaches and employees to buy Nike apparel at a discounted rate.
Attorney Jeffrey McLeod of McLeod Consulting in Newport News had proposed fundraising ideas to the school district and helped broker the deal.
Nike and apparel vendor BSN Sports were chosen for the three-year contract over three other proposals.
The deal was first reported by The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/175WtnQ). The deal gives the schools $10,000 worth of free Nike apparel each year, along with rebates and deep discounts.
While such deals are done among high schools across the country, McLeod says it's rare for an entire school system to band together.
He says the agreement gives the school district "the opportunity for affordability and for purchasing a mass product at a low rate."
