STAUNTON, Va. (AP) -- Western State Hospital is celebrating the completion of a new $140.5 million facility in Staunton.
A public tour of the new state psychiatric hospital will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hospital and local officials held a ceremony Wednesday to mark the facility's completion.
Western State Hospital social work director Pat Higgins tells The News Leader (http://bit.ly/1dLxNTE ) that patients will move into the new hospital on Oct. 29.
In 1963, the hospital had 3,300 patients. That number has since dwindled to about 215 as treatment has shifted to community settings.
Western State first opened in 1828 at a site near downtown Staunton. The current facility was built in the 1950s and 1960s.
