FANCY GAP, Va. (AP) -- Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal, multi-vehicle crash that closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 77 in Carroll County.

Authorities say the crash took place around 10:50 a.m. Saturday near the Virginia-North Carolina border. It was misting and foggy at the time of the crash.

Three tractor-trailers, two passenger vehicles and a motorcycle were involved in the crash that killed 71-year-old Dan H. Grubb of The Plains, Ohio. The car he was driving struck one of the tractor-trailers.

Those injured in the crash were transported to three area hospitals.

Officials say there were a series of secondary crashes that occurred in the backup from the first crash, but no fatalities or multi-vehicle crashes.

Northbound lanes of I-77 reopened around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
