Man turns self in, charged with murdering Mt. Vernon student

WASHINGTON – Fairfax County Police have identified a suspect related to the homicide of a 16-year-old who was shot and killed in Fairfax County early Sunday morning.

Jose Alberto Blanco-Calzadilla, 23, turned himself in Sunday night. He’s charged with the second-degree murder of Gerard Gomez, police say.

Gomez, of Mount Vernon, was shot and and killed outside the Residence Inn on Westwood Center Drive, in the Vienna area, about 2 a.m. Sunday.

Gomez was a junior at Mount Vernon High School, according to a letter sent to parents and guardians by principal Nardos King. Counselors will be available to students beginning Monday.
