Towson shortens punishment for cheerleading team

Tuesday - 9/10/2013, 1:03pm  ET

TOWSON, Md. -- Towson University has shortened the suspension of its cheerleading team after hazing allegations sidelined the squad for the entire academic year.

The team had initially been suspended for the year, but the school said Tuesday that the punishment had been changed to social probation for the fall semester.

That means the team, which won the national championship in April, can practice but can't participate in any university or off-campus events or make appearances as a team. The members must also complete 650 hours of community service by the end of the semester.

A statement from the university did not provide any new details about the nature of the hazing allegations, which the university says it learned about last month.

The team can appeal the decision to the university president.
