CASTLEWOOD, Va. (AP) -- An Alpha Natural Resources subsidiary has idled a mine in Russell County and laid off 41 workers.
Alpha spokesman Ted Pile tells media outlets that the Laurel Mountain Mine couldn't remain profitable. He says the mine's costs have increased while coal prices have fallen.
Pile says Alpha subsidiary Dickenson-Russell Coal idled the mine Saturday.
Fifty-one workers remain on the job removing equipment from the mine.
