WASHINGTON - Three New Jersey judges decided on Tuesday that when it comes to texting and driving, you don't have to be the one behind the wheel to get in trouble.
The appeals court judges were ruling on a case in which an 18-year-old driver was in the middle of a text conversation with his girlfriend when he collided with a couple on a motorcycle, seriously injuring both of them.
The couple sued not only the driver, but his girlfriend.
The judges ruled in favor of the girlfriend in this particular case, but said that in general someone could be held liable for texting someone whom they knew was driving.
What do you think of the ruling? Should a texter who isn't driving be as legally responsible for a crash as the driver? And does anyone have an idea how to get the messages across about texting and driving?
