Friday - 8/30/2013, 7:12am  ET

DANVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Virginia State Police say a pilot was killed in a fiery plane crash at an airport in Danville.

State police were called to the scene shortly after 7:50 p.m. Thursday.

In a news release, state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the single-engine Piper Warrior plane was coming in for a landing at the airport when it made a sharp turn and struck an instrument landing system tower. The plane crashed near the runway and caught fire.

Geller says the pilot, a man from Danville, was the only person on the plane. His remains have been sent to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for positive identification and an autopsy.
