WASHINGTON (AP) -- A hearing is scheduled to determine whether three U.S. Naval Academy students will be court-martialed over allegations they raped a female midshipman.
The Article 32 hearing is set to begin Tuesday at the Navy Yard in Washington.
The midshipmen played on the football team. They have been charged with rape, sexual assault or other sexual misconduct. They also have been charged with making a false official statement.
Authorities say the attack occurred in April 2012 in an off-campus house.
The case has brought renewed attention to how the nation's military academies handle reports of sexual assault. In addition, a string of sexual assault cases has drawn attention in Congress, the Pentagon and the White House.
An Article 32 hearing is the equivalent of a grand jury hearing for civilians.
