U.Va. ending insurance coverage for worker spouses

Friday - 8/23/2013, 9:43am  ET

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- The University of Virginia is ending insurance coverage for working spouses of its employees starting next year.

University spokesman McGregor McCance says the move is part of the university's plan to save money in the long run.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports coverage for children will be unaffected.

U.Va. workers hoping to keep their spouses enrolled must certify during an open enrollment period in October that the spouses don't have access to coverage with their employers. Spouses employed with the university can keep their coverage.

McCance says the number of affected workers and spouses won't be determined until after the open enrollment period.

U.Va. also will require workers to complete an online health survey and sign up for a health screening by Oct. 31 to avoid an increase in premiums.
