RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginians have a little more than a week to vote on the state's top 10 endangered artifacts.

More than 26,000 votes already have been cast. The balloting is being conducted online at www.vaTop10artifacts.org . It ends at midnight Aug. 29.

Sixteen artifacts have been nominated by museums, libraries and other cultural organizations. The oldest is a 1749 plaque marking the French territory in Colonial Virginia, nominated by the Virginia Historical Society. The most recent is a 1999 sculpture, nominated by the Radford University Art Museum.

The voting will be considered by an independent panel of conservators and others who will select a top 10, which will be announced Sept. 16. The Virginia Association of Museums project is intended to raise awareness of the importance of conserving historic and cultural treasures.
