Port of Baltimore on track to break more records

Sunday - 8/11/2013, 1:49pm  ET

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Officials say the Port of Baltimore is on target for another record-breaking year next year.

In June, the port broke a record for shipping cars. About 23,000 automobiles were sent from Baltimore to destinations around the world.

Port officials have said the port handled 9.55 million tons of general cargo from July 2012 to June 2013, topping fiscal 2012's 9.33 million tons. General cargo includes autos, farm and construction machinery, containers and forest products. That includes rolled paper and wood pulp.

According to the Maryland Port Authority, nearly 15,000 people have direct jobs at the port. The business supports another 40,000 jobs. And overall, 108,000 jobs are linked to port activities statewide.
