Page Co. to proceed with old school's demolition

Wednesday - 8/7/2013, 12:32pm  ET

LURAY, Va. -- Page County officials are proceeding with a plan to demolish an old schoolhouse, despite pleas from a local group to preserve it.

The county plans to build a new administrative building and convert the schoolhouse site to a parking lot.

The former Luray Graded and High School was built in 1881.

WHSV-TV (http://bit.ly/1596IT8 ) reports that members of the Save Our School Foundation asked the county Board of Supervisor on Tuesday to keep the building.

Board chairman Johnny Woodward says the board didn't make any formal motion on the request. He says the plan for the new building will proceed.

A date for the schoolhouse building's demolition hasn't been set.
