RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The husband of an embattled Richmond School Board member is facing a felony charge of manufacturing marijuana.
Media outlets report Shonda Harris-Muhammed's husband, 42-year-old Demetrius Muhammed, was arrested Tuesday after Richmond police responded to a tip around 8:30 p.m. and seized one marijuana plant.
The school board barred Shonda Harris-Muhammed from using the title of doctor earlier this year after a dispute over whether she earned a doctoral degree. She argues she completed the work, but Walden University has told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that she did not earn the degree.
Demetrius Muhammed was appointed a public defender on Wednesday. A call to the defender's office was not immediately returned.
He will be back in court Aug. 28.
