WASHINGTON (AP) -- The District of Columbia school system isn't complying with a nine-year-old law that mandates random drug testing but an official says it will begin soon.

The Washington Post reports ( ) the D.C. Office of the Inspector General condemned the lack of testing in a report last month.

The warning from the Inspector General's office, the second in about a year, prompted the school system to tell teachers and other employees that they will be subject to tests, starting in 30 days, when drug or alcohol use is suspected and in certain other situations.

Schools spokeswoman Melissa Salmanowitz says the school system will begin random testing in the fall. More than 8,000 people are subject to the law.
