New U.Va. rector says he'll be consensus builder

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- New University of Virginia Rector George Martin says he will be a consensus builder between the Board of Visitors and the school.

Martin tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch that U.Va.'s founder, President Thomas Jefferson, didn't call the school's board the Board of Trustees. He says it's clear the board isn't going to run day-to-day operations. That's the president's role.

Martin declined to elaborate on the direction and challenges that he sees for the university. He also declined to discuss the uproar on campus last year following the board's attempt to oust President Teresa Sullivan.

Martin succeeded Helen Dragas as rector on July 1. He's the university's first African-American rector.

Former Richmond city manager Robert C. Bobb has known Martin since 1986. He says Martin will provide calm where there's a storm.
