Baltimore declares 'code red' for hot weather

Sunday - 7/7/2013, 6:41pm  ET

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore's health commissioner has declared a "code red heat alert," the city's first of the year.

That means the city is opening emergency cooling centers where residents can spend some time in the air conditioning and drink water.

Temperatures were expected to reach the high 90s on Sunday afternoon, with a heat index over 100.

Health commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot says heat-related deaths and medical problems are preventable. She's urging people to stay cool and hydrated and to check on those who don't have air conditioning in their homes.
