WASHINGTON -- A Washington woman has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for robbing two northwest banks in 20 minutes.
Thirty-six-year-old Mercedes Romero was also ordered to pay nearly $1,600 in restitution to the banks at sentencing Thursday.
According to government evidence, Romero walked into a PNC Bank on Wisconsin Avenue about 9:10 a.m. Feb. 4. Prosecutors say she gave a teller a note demanding cash, and walked out.
At about 9:28 p.m., Romero went into the Bank of America on Connecticut Avenue, gave the teller a demand note and said she had a gun. She fled after being given cash.
Romero was arrested on Feb. 21 after her picture was widely published and broadcast.
