NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- A Virginia city that borders North Carolina is casting a wary eye toward legislation that could allow a large landfill just over the state line.

Chesapeake officials fear a landfill in Camden County, N.C., could degrade its drinking water supply.

Among other things, the measure approved by the North Carolina Senate would reduce the buffer zone between proposed landfills and lands protected by the state and federal governments.

Chesapeake also worries a large landfill could disrupt operations at a Navy facility that straddles the Virginia and North Carolina border. The amended proposal awaiting action in the North Carolina House would allow state regulators to deny a permit if a proposed landfill would harm military operations or training.

The Navy has said it's concerned about a landfill's impact on its radar.
