International Seamen's House in Norfolk to be sold

NORFOLK, Va. -- A Norfolk ministry that serves mariners from around the world is selling its house because of financial issues.

Since the late 1960s, the International Seamen's House served as a home away from home for mariners.

But crew members of ships rarely come to the house anymore. Its owner, the Norfolk Seaman's Friend Society, is struggling to pay expenses.

Society board president Sylvia Butler tells The Virginian-Pilot ( ) that crew members don't have as much down time today to leave their ships.

Butler says crew members' movements also are restricted because of increased security since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Volunteers with the ministry now go to the ships.
