Summer in the city starts with Janis Joplin

WASHINGTON – Many D.C. area music fans will be celebrating the start of summer in Dover, Del., at the Firefly Festival, but there are plenty of hometown events to satisfy just about everyone.

Starting Friday and running through July 31 at Arena Stage, “One Night with Janis” relives the music and history of rock-and-roll icon, Janis Joplin.

The stage show also includes musical selections from Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith — each influenced Joplin’s groundbreaking style.

Arena Stage is teaming up with local charity Hungry for Music to offer discounted tickets by entering the promo code “HUNGRY4JANIS” at the checkout page. Hungry for Music provides musical instruments to under-served children across the country.

Saturday at the 9:30 Club, Who’s Bad pays tribute to the music of Michael Jackson.

Rocker Courtney Love takes the stage Saturday night at the Fillmore Silver Spring.

Scheduled for Saturday at the IOTA Club and Cafe, Vandaveer performs its striking brand of neo-folk.

Blues legend Buddy Guy is scheduled to perform Sunday at the State Theatre. According to the venue’s website, a limited number of seats will be available on a first- come-first-served basis.
