SALEM, Va. (AP) -- LewisGale Medical Center is appealing the state's denial of its application to open a neonatal intensive care unit.
The hospital contends that the state health commissioner's reasoning for denying the certificate of public need application was flawed.
Health commissioner Dr. Cynthia Romero determined in April that the proposed unit would duplicate existing services in the region.
The Roanoke Times reports (http://bit.ly/19QFAQn ) that the hospital filed its appeal earlier this month in Salem Circuit Court.
LewisGale's petition says the state has allowed separate neonatal intensive care units offering different levels of care in the same region. The hospital argues that hospitals in Southwest Virginia are treated differently by the state than those in other areas.
