NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk is welcoming a new baby giraffe to its herd.
Officials say 11-year-old mother Imara and father Billy welcomed their new baby on Thursday. The calf weighed in at 150 pounds and measured 6 feet 4 inches tall at birth.
The newborn hasn't been given a name, but Executive Director Greg Bockheim likes the idea of naming him Paul after the city's mayor.
Officials say the new baby has been given a preliminary check-up and appears to be very healthy. He can be viewed by visitors at the zoo's indoor giraffe exhibit.
Masai giraffe are the largest subspecies of giraffe and the tallest land mammal in the world. They are native to Kenya and Tanzania and are characterized by their jagged spots.
