DUCK, N.C. (AP) -- Officials in Duck say a Virginia man has drowned in moderate surf.
Town manager Christopher Layton says 39-year-old Joseph Marotta of Lynchburg, Va., was pulled from the water by public safety personnel who immediately began performing CPR before Dare County paramedics arrived.
Marotta was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon. Surf conditions were described as good with a low risk of rip currents and a water temperature of 64 degrees.
Randolph College President John Klein said Marotta had been a controller at the school since February 2012. Klein said Marotta was vacationing with his wife and five children.
