Lawsuit over Md.'s ACC exit goes before Md. court

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- A lawyer for the University of Maryland told a judge that the penalty the university is being told to pay to withdraw from the Atlantic Coast Conference is "crippling" and "outrageous."

Lawyers for the university and the ACC were in a Prince George's County courtroom Thursday in a lawsuit that stems from Maryland's announcement in November that it will leave the ACC for the Big Ten in 2014.

The ACC sued the school in North Carolina to make it pay a $52 million fee for leaving. Maryland responded by suing the ACC in a Maryland court, calling the penalty illegal.

Lawyers for the ACC asked a Maryland judge Thursday to dismiss or halt the university's lawsuit in the state until the North Carolina lawsuit is concluded. Maryland opposed that request.
