WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) -- A historic but decaying former hotel in Winchester is being converted into a retail, residential and entertainment complex.

The Winchester Economic Development Authority and Taylor Plaza LLC are partnering on the $3.6 million renovation of the former Taylor Hotel.

The project includes restaurant, retail and residential space, a farmer's market and a grassy entertainment pavilion.

City Manager Dale Iman tells The Winchester Star ( ) that the former hotel is an integral part of the city's history and should be preserved.

The front part of the building was constructed in 1846. The hotel served as headquarters for both the Union and Confederate armies and as a hospital during the Civil War.

Preservation Virginia added it to the group's list of most endangered historic sites in the state in 2010.
