Mayor vetoes aldermen's vote for support staffer

Saturday - 4/20/2013, 7:39pm  ET

FREDERICK, Md. - Frederick Mayor Randy McClement has vetoed aldermen's vote to hire a fulltime support staffer to help them with legislative work.

McClement vetoed adding the position Thursday. He said the board acted hastily. He also said the position person in the job would serve the five aldermen and the budget director, and that those should be two separate positions.

The News-Post of Frederick reports (http://bit.ly/15sMb1C) that until March 2010, the aldermen had a person on staff for support, but McClement eliminated that position. Since then, the aldermen have relied on the office manager in the city's legal department for assistance. That person recently took another job.

Alderwoman Shelley Aloi was unhappy with the veto, accusing the mayor of not supporting the aldermen.
