ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot is calling on the president of Towson University to resign over her handling of sports programs at the university.

Franchot said Wednesday that University President Maravene Loeschke has "forfeited her claim to moral leadership." WBAL-AM ( reports that Franchot made his comments during a meeting of the Maryland Board of Public Works, which hasn't voted yet on the university's request to build classrooms in Harford County. Both the comptroller and Gov. Martin O'Malley have raised concerns about Towson's leadership.

Loeschke has proposed eliminating baseball and men's soccer, saying the decision was based on financial concerns and the federal requirement that universities offer equal opportunities for male and female athletes. Loeschke was not present at the board meeting.
