NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- An engineering firm is studying a proposed expansion of a light rail system to Naval Station Norfolk.
The study will determine whether extending The Tide to the base is a better solution than expanding bus service. It will identify potential routes.
Media outlets report Hampton Roads Transit has hired HDR Engineering to conduct the 15-month study.
The Hampton Roads Planning Commission says 80,000 vehicles enter and leave the base daily.
Hampton Roads Transit spokesman Tom Holden says the study is the first step in a years-long process to pursue federal funding to extend The Tide.
The Tide opened in Norfolk in the fall of 2011. Norfolk City Council requested the study in October 2012.
