WHITE HALL, Md. (AP) -- Harford County authorities say an off-duty sheriff's deputy is on administrative leave after firing his gun during a confrontation.
The sheriff's office says the altercation started Monday afternoon after the car of an off-duty sheriff's deputy was rear-ended while stopped in traffic on Norrisville Road.
Authorities say the man, identified as 33-year-old William Redding Harvey V, tried to drive away after the deputy approached his car. The sheriff's office says the deputy fired his service weapon because he was concerned that he might be struck by the fleeing car.
Authorities say Harvey continued driving away, later crashed his car and was caught after a foot chase.
Harvey was being evaluated at a hospital and faces charges including second-degree assault and resisting arrest.
Online court records don't list a defense lawyer.
