WASHINGTON – It’s a prank originated by teens in Virginia that is causing a mess in dozens of grocery store aisles.

Now Fairfax County police are looking into who is suspected of being responsible for the increasingly expensive stunt.

“Gallon Smashing” — a prank that started in a Vienna grocery store — is now being copied by teens across the country.

The videos posted online share a common theme. A teen walking down a grocery store aisle pretends to trip, throwing gallons of milk or juice he is carrying onto the floor. The gallons bust open and splash nearby shoppers, creating a huge mess that store employees have to clean up.

Fairfax County police officers are investigating several reports around the county of gallon smashing, according to Officer Don Gotthardt, county police spokesman.

The original “Gallon Smashing” video is temporarily offline, but other versions of the same prank are available, according to DCist.com .

The teens in the Vienna stunt have issued an apology and offered to pay for the gallons of milk and juice they intentionally wasted, says Gotthardt.

But he says it is unclear how the apology will affect the investigation.
