Howard County collects 600 guns in buyback program

COLUMBIA, Md. (AP) -- Howard County police have collected more than 600 guns at a gun buyback event in Columbia.

Police say residents began lining up two hours before the event began Saturday. By late afternoon, the department had collected 631 weapons. Police paid $100 for each gun turned in by a county resident.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman says the large turnout shows many people have firearms they don't want or need. He says there are hundreds fewer guns now that could fall into the hands of children or thieves.

Police collected 314 handguns, 168 rifles, 149 shot guns and other BB guns and ammunition.

Police also distributed more than 200 free gun locks and provided gun safety information to help prevent accidental shootings.
