Seizure of Saltville Rescue Squad assets denied

Tuesday - 2/19/2013, 9:58am  ET

ABINGDON, Va. (AP) -- A federal judge has rejected a prosecution bid to seize cash and property from the Saltville Rescue Squad.

U.S. District Judge James P. Jones says there's no reliable way of knowing whether the assets were bought with proceeds from a fraudulent billing scheme.

Prosecutors had sought the forfeiture of more than $330,000, several ambulances and other emergency equipment to recoup losses stemming from the scheme.

A federal jury convicted former squad president Eddie Louthian Sr. last September on health care fraud and perjury charges. The jury acquitted the squad as a corporation in the case.

Media outlets report that Jones issued his ruling last week.
