PORTSMOUTH, Va. - A Coast Guard petty officer who rescued the pilot of a crashed Navy jet is being honored.
The Meritorious Service Medal will be awarded to Petty Officer 2nd Class Nicholas A. Beane on Tuesday at Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads in Chesapeake.
The medal is the non-combat counterpart to the Bronze Star.
The Coast Guard says Beane found the pilot while trying to evacuate people after the fighter jet crashed into an apartment complex in Virginia Beach in 2012.
Beane and another rescuer cut the pilot free from his parachute and pulled him to safety.
