CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Graduate and undergraduate students from around the country will be coming to the University of Virginia this summer for high- performance computing and software engineering training.

The Charlottesville school says the Intensive Summer School for Computing in Environmental Sciences program is being funded by a three-year, $700,000 grant from NASA.

Officials say the purpose is to help the space agency cultivate and recruit young environmental scientists with the higher-end computing skills.

The program is modeled on programs already in place at U.Va. It will be held from May 29 to June 14 and will continue in the summers of 2014 and 2015.

Half of the 20 participants will be selected for eight-week internships at various NASA centers, including the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton.
