WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) - A College of William & Mary graduate has given $10 million to the school to support its freshman seminars.

The gift from the Hunter Smith Family Foundation establishes the Hunter J. Smith Endowment for Freshman Seminars.

President Taylro Reveley says in a news release that the gift will support a cornerstone of undergraduate education at William & Mary.

Smith is a 1951 graduate of the school. He says the seminars help freshmen develop writing and thinking skills.

William & Mary provides about 100 freshman seminars each year. Topics for the spring semester include "From Cavemen to Kings," "Anthropology of Food," "Astrophotography," and "Emerging Diseases."
