Groundwater seepage still problem at Va. tunnel

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A $3.6 million effort to stop groundwater from seeping into the openings of the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel hasn't kept the water out.

The project also included repairing potholes caused by the seepage.

Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Lauren Hansen tells The Virginian-Pilot ( that a sealant slowed the seepage. But the groundwater found other ways in and reappeared in a few locations that had been repaired.

Hansen says the department is researching a new approach that could involve diverting the groundwater to drains rather than trying to stop the seepage.

VDOT eastern regional operations director Dwayne Cook says the seepage doesn't compromise the tunnel's integrity.
