D.C. mayor open to armed guards in all schools

Thursday - 1/17/2013, 2:36pm  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray says he's open to the possibility of placing armed guards in city public schools.

The National Rifle Association has pushed for beefed-up school security in the wake of last month's mass shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

The district has sworn police officers who are armed in dozens of high schools and middle schools. But The Washington Examiner reports that Gray, a Democrat, says he might support a plan to install armed officers in every school. He says he wouldn't support allowing teachers to carry guns.

D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson says he doesn't support the idea. He says, "the response to gun violence is not more guns." The district has some of the toughest gun-control laws in the nation.
