WASHINGTON (AP) - The District of Columbia ranks third nationwide for the school choices it offers parents, according to a new report.

New Orleans and New York City finished ahead of the district in the rankings expected to be released Tuesday by the Brookings Institution. http://wapo.st/12iG5fWThe Washington Post reports the Washington think tank graded more than 100 cities and large suburbs on policies governing choice and availability of education options. Those options include magnet schools, charter schools and virtual education.

Brookings officials say more than 40 percent of district students are in choice schools. But they note the district does have room for improvement, particularly in matching parents with schools they prefer. For example, admission to oversubscribed schools is determined by lottery. A school official said changes are being considered.
