Sunday - 12/9/2012, 1:30pm  ET

OVERLEA, Md. - An off-duty Baltimore County police officer has been shot in Overlea after he attempted to disperse a crowd of people blocking a residential street.

Baltimore County police say the officer was driving near Dale Avenue and Danville Road around 3:20 a.m. Sunday when he found a large group of people blocking the street. Police say the officer asked the crowd to move so he could pass.

After an initial investigation, police say a man emerged from the crowd with a gun and fired several shots into the officer's car. He was struck twice.

The officer was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center with non- life threatening injuries. Police say he has been released from the hospital.

Investigators say they believe the officer was not targeted.
